Cactus League Lunch Draws more than 400 to Surprise Ballpark

February 20, 2013

Hall of Fame third baseman George Brett endorsed the Cactus League during remarks to a group of more than 400 boosters gathered for the annual kick-off event, this year planned as a luncheon event at the Surprise Ballpark, spring training home to the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers.

Brett told the crowd that he was at first opposed to leaving Florida for Arizona when the team pulled up stakes and settled in Surprise in 2003. But since then, he said he has become a big fan, and would never consider a return to the rival Grapefruit League.

His comments drew a huge applause from the group, seated at tables beyond the right field foul line. The season kicks off Friday with some venues hosting charity games. The official start to the spring training schedule comes Saturday with a full slate of games around the Phoenix metropolitan area.
